Microsoft to Launch Windows Server 2008 jointly with Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 on February 27, 2008.
Some of the features of Windows Server 2008 are:
• Virtualization of multiple operating systems (windows, linux, etc.) on one server.
• Web server management with Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0.
• .NET Framework 3.0.
• Dual-IP layer TCP/IP stack architecture for IPv4 and IPv6 support.
• Network auto tuning.
• Rich APIs for greater extensibility.
• Next Generation TCP/IP Stack (1 *see notes).
• Network Access Protection (NAP).
• Server Core Installation (2 *see notes).
• New features in Terminal Services (TS) like TS RemoteApp, TS Gateway, TS Easy Print, etc.
• Microsoft Windows PowerShell, a new command-line shell.
1. Windows Server 2003 and Vista include a new TCP/IP protocol stack (known as Next Generation TCP/IP stack) which is a redesign of TCP/IP functionality for both Internet Protocol version 4 and 6.
2. Server Core installation in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 operating system will be a new option for installing Server 2008. Server Core installation will provide minimal environment for running specific server roles which will reduce the management and maintenance of the server. In essence, its reduced maintenance, reduced attack surface, reduced management, and less disk space usage. Server Core installation supports Active Directory Domain Services, DHCP Server, DNS Server, Streaming Media Services, File Services, and Print Server.
